Dutch Maximum Steam Weekend

DAY 1

Travelling by Eurostar from London St Pancras to Rotterdam, then onwards to Woerden and our hotel for four nights, the Best Western Hotel, where we check in and enjoy our first evening at leisure to explore our new surroundings.

DAY 2

After breakfast this morning, we travel by rail to Hoorn where we join the historic Museum Steam Train that meanders along a unique railway line, across the West Frisian meadows, and past characteristic station buildings to Medemblik. Here, an old-fashioned steamer awaits to sail gently across the IJsselmeer as we enjoy our lunch on board. On arrival to the village of Enkhuizen, we visit the Zuiderzee Museum and walk back in time along the cobbled streets of this open-air museum featuring more than 140 historic buildings which create a superb, authentic atmosphere.

DAY 3

Today, our private coach takes us to Ouddorp to ride the morning RTM Steam Tram to West-Repart and return over what was once part of the extensive, rural tramways in the Netherlands. We will continue by road to the Stoomtrein Katwijk Leiden to experience the sights, sounds, and smells of days gone by at the platform where an almost 100-year-old steam locomotive and its antique wooden carriages are waiting to take us on the narrow-gauge railway around the lake. After exploring their extensive collection of meticulously maintained steam and diesel locomotives, we return to Woerden for an evening at leisure.

DAY 4

Today, we experience the fabulous Veluwsche Stoomtrein Festival, the largest steam train festival in the Netherlands! Relive former times at various stations between Apeldoorn and Dieren where there are model railways, steam rollers, steam tractors, operational steam sawmills, trade stands, and much more. Our day ticket provides unlimited rides to experience every inch of this fantastic event, and the last train of the day is often triple headed!

DAY 5

We bid farewell to Woerden and to the Netherlands, returning by rail to Rotterdam, where we will join the Eurostar service to London St Pancras.
